The Gathering is an abstract representation. The Sangoma people held gatherings under the light of the full moon where elders and healers would share messages with the people. I didn’t know this was what I was making when I made it. I was just inspired to create this design. When it was complete, the name and story came to me. The red circles are the backs of the heads of the elders, the white lines, their robes and the ovals in the darkness, the heads of the people listening. 'Sangoma' comes from the word sanguine, meaning my blood, my people, my tribe.
